Hawthorn superstar and 2018 Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell is likely to miss the entire 2019 season after the club confirmed he has broken his leg.
The Hawks confirmed at lunchtime the midfielder had suffered the injury at a Friday morning training session at Waverley Park.
The 25-year-old will underdo surgery and then enter the rehab process.
“For Tom to suffer an injury like this is incredibly disappointing for both him and our footy club,” Hawthorn GM of Football Graham Wright said.
“He will undergo surgery over the weekend and as a result will most likely miss the 2019 season.
“However, Tom is a very resilient young man and we have no doubt that he will tackle his rehab with the same professionalism and diligence with which he approaches his training.”
A caller to SEN radio explained what happened as Mitchell suffered the injury.
“They were doing some clearance work & he went down around half forward. The training staff were holding his leg, immobilising it. When the Ambulance arrived it was pretty grim. The whole playing group went silent,” he said.
The injury is a brutal blow not just to the midfielder but the team as well, as they look to bounce back from 2018’s straight sets finals exit.
