STAR jockey Hugh Bowman has been handed a 35-meeting suspension for actions during his ride in the Melbourne Cup.
Bowman, who rode Marmelo to second place on Tuesday, was charged with careless riding, excessive whip use and coming in at more than half a kilogram overweight.
The suspension will see Bowman miss key rides in Group 1 races as well as major meetings in Hong Kong and Japan. Bowman was set to ride Japan Cup second favourite Cheval Grand.
Stewards found Bowman guilty on all three charges and he was issued suspensions of 12 meetings for careless riding, eight for overusing the whip and 21 for being overweight.
At their discretion stewards reduced the ban to 35 meetings. The ban will last for around a month and allow him to return for a crucial meeting in Hong Kong in mid-December.
Winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy was fined $3000 for using the whip nine times in the final 400 metres of the race when the legal limit is five.
