Which horses have been the biggest firmers to win the Melbourne Cup?

Published by Staff Writers, 5th November 2018 on

IT has been a long 363 days since betting began for the 2018 Melbourne Cup.

But while some horses were in the mix as soon as bookies started taking money – the day after Rekindling won the 2017 Cup – others have come from nowhere to be in contention.

So with many punters looking to follow the wisdom of the crowd, here are the horses that have firmed the most to win the Melbourne Cup.

The biggest firmer has been favourite Yucatan, who was at $101 before nominations but now sits a $5.50 favourite with Sportsbet.

Much of that can be credited to his incredible run in the 2400m Herbert Power Stakes on October 13, with jockey James McDonald easing Yucatan over the line after leading by eight lengths into the straight.

Next-best are a pair of roughies, Red Cardinal and Runaway, who both sat at $201 before nominations but are now at $35.

After running 11th in the Cup last year, Damien Oliver will be hoping Red Cardinal can keep up the form that has seen it win twice over 3200m in group races.

Gai Waterhouse’s Runaway firmed after winning the Geelong Cup and led throughout to win the 2800m VRC St Leger last autumn.

Second-favourite Magic Circle was already at $41 pre-nominations, but has shortened all the way down to $8.50. The length will be no problem for the horse ridden by Corey Brown as it recently won the Chester Cup (3749m) and Henry II Stakes (3264m) both by six lengths.

Many have backed Best Solution to become the first horse since Ethereal to do the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double in the same year, seeing it move from $51 pre-nominations into $12.

Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner Ventura Storm has moved from $101 into $26 while many of the less-fancied horses have done well to be as favoured as they are now, including Zacada ($301 into $91) and Chestnut Coat ($151 into $51).
