Panthers board member Greg Alexander denies the club is targeting Trent Barrett

Published on 15th August 2018 on news.com.au

MANLY coach Trent Barrett is not under consideration for Penrith’s vacant NRL coaching job, says prominent Panthers board member Greg Alexander.

In fact Alexander has made the stunning accusation the Sea Eagles are the ones who leaked the rumour linking Barrett to the Panthers in the first place in an attempt to push him out of Brookvale.

Barrett has reportedly resigned and will finish up at the end of the season with the club expected to clarify his position later on Wednesday.

“Trent Barrett’s name has not come up in a board meeting over the last six months even though he has been linked with Penrith,” deputy chairman Alexander told Macquarie Sports Radio on Wednesday.

“I had to ask this a couple of weeks ago because the story wouldn’t go away, I said to Gus ‘are we chasing Trent Barrett?’ and he said ‘absolutely not, I haven’t spoken to him’.

“I believe Gus. That news and that leak is coming from elsewhere.

“My take on this is the Sea Eagles have been trying to get rid of Baz and they’ve been linking him with any club they could.”

Brandy: We don’t want Barrett

Barrett is believed to have resigned from Manly despite having a year left to run on his contract, while the Panthers are looking for a new head coach after sacking Anthony Griffin last week.
