AFL Round 17

Saint Kilda v Essendon
Friday Night Footy and it should be an absolute belter of a match. The Saints have moved themselves into 7th on the ladder on the back of four straight wins, while the Bombers have flopped around the past few weeks dropping a couple very winnable games they are running out of opportunities to make the top 8.

The Saints are knocking on the top fours door along with a couple other teams so this game becomes so vitally important for them. The Bombers will be desperate to keep in touch with the top 8 but the Saints look just a little more balanced and have been in more consistent form. Both sides play bruise free football and are in the top four for uncontested possessions. The Saints are in the top few sides for inside 50’s and need to capitalise on these entries if they are to hold off the Bombers. The Bombers have been very fast starters this season winning an amazing 12 out of 15 first quarters. The Saints will need to be switched on early.

Predict Saint Kilda win 13 points

Port Adelaide v North Melbourne

Port should be looking for another good win here, the are the ultimate flat track bullies yet to beat a team in the top eight but absolutely belt everyone outside of it. The Kangaroos have played some good patches of footy but just can’t seem to put it together when the heat is on. The Power need to really start to put some games together and take a big scalp if they are to be taken seriously as finals contenders. They have the player stock to put together a good run into the finals and it starts today with a big win over the Kangaroos.

Predict Port Adelaide win 59 points

Geelong v Hawthorn

It’s a big week this week with Luke Hodge announcing his retirement at the end of the season and timed it nicely with a game against their arch rivals the Cats. The Cats are cemented inside the top 4 but will not want to take the foot of the pedal against a bit of a resurgent Hawks who would love nothing more than to upset a few teams apple carts on the way to the finals.

Mathematically a chance to make finals but highly unlikely the Hawks have been showing lots of that fight expected from them. The Cats are purring nicely at the moment half a game off the Crows and Giants and will be starting to think of a top two position to gain a home ground advantage come finals time.

Expect a blast from the past with these sides battling out a tight contest.
Predict Geelong win 17 points

Gold Coast v Collingwood

A game that now amounts to very little for both sides, the season is pretty much over and the focus is changing fast for the clubs to next year and if they will be looking for a new coach or not. Both clubs have been linked to Brad Scott so will be a very interesting few weeks. The Pies seem to be positioned better and have a better spread of players across the field. Both sides are right up in the better half of of the competition for contested possession. The Pies have been been horrid in front of goal this year and something needs to be done to fix this going forward or they will go nowhere. The Suns need to find help for Ablett, it’s simple for them if he plays well they are in the game but when he doesn’t or is injured the Suns struggle.
Predict Collingwood win 27 points

GWS v Sydney

It doesn’t get much bigger than this for the clash of the Titans. The Giants coming off two draws in a row and the Swans the form side of the Competition winning 8of the last 9 games and have put themselves back in the top eight and are becoming a major threat for the finals as other sides stumble around them. Both sides have some important inclusions none bigger than Josh Kennedy for the Swans and for the Giants it’s Toby Greene and Stevie J. The Giants will be hoping to burst out of the gates and will finish strong the Swans have struggled in final quarters this season. The Giants will be desperate for a win after two draws in the past two games, while the Swans will be pushing to keep their winning streak going and plant themselves in the top eight. If the Giants can hold the Swans forwards impact in the game then they will win. The Swans will need to get on top in the middle and keep playing that intense style of footy to keep the Giants at bay.
Predict Sydney win 9 points

Melbourne v Adelaide

One of the most important games of the round the Crows even though sitting on top have had a few questions raised in the past few rounds but looked to have found some form last week against the Bulldogs. The Demons have won four of their past five games but like the Crows have looked a bit vulnerable. The Demons exposed the Crows at home earlier on the year and are very capable of beating the Crows again. The game takes another interesting turn with the teams going to TIO stadium in the NT to play this game, it just adds another dimension to an already tough game to pick.

The Crows will be hoping to bring the form from last week and if they do should win. The Demons will need to keep the Crows locked up and frustrated and grind them down.
Predict Adelaide win 19 points
